South Africa: Cape Malay Cooking

South Africa, known as the Rainbow Nation, boasts a diverse cultural mélange which goes hand-in-hand with a rich culinary heritage.

Spicy aromas fill the air of Cape Town’s colorful Bo-Kaap—an area renowned for its Cape Malay culture and full-flavored cuisine—as hearty meals such as bobotie is accompanied by homemade chutney and friendly household chatter; dhaltjies are enjoyed on the go while sweet treats like koeksisters tantalize the taste buds of those liking the sweeter side of life.

This fusion of cooking traditions dates back to the 17th and 18th century when slaves from the East were brought to the Cape by the Dutch settlers. Today it remains a significant part of the Western Cape’s culture.

Join a Bo-Kaap cooking tour and learn more about the Malay style of cooking, its background and the array of spices used. Guests have the opportunity to visit a spice shop, prepare dishes such as a traditional curry, learn to mix their own masala and fold samoosas. And after a fun day’s cooking, sit back relax and enjoy the meal!

Take the recipes and this special experience home with you and delight your family with a taste of the Cape!

Yester year elegance in the Cape Winelands

By special invitation prior departure to South Africa guests are welcomed to the majestic Vergelegen Wine Estate founded on 1 February 1700.

When Willem Adriaan succeeded his father, Simon van der Stel, as governor of the Cape in 1700, it didn’t take long before he claimed a modest 30,000 hectare piece of land for himself. It took three days by ox-wagon to reach Willem Adriaan’s farm on the slopes of the Hottentots Holland mountain range overlooking the Atlantic Ocean; hence the name Vergelegen (meaning “situated far away”).

A mere 45 minute journey by Vintage Car, the oak lined lanes of Vergelegen welcomes guests. Arrival cocktails are served in the garden in front of the estate’s opulent Cape Dutch Manor House. As the sunset reflect against the beautiful Hottentots Holland Mountains, guests make their way through the manor house onto open lawns and are surprised by the majestic Camphor Trees that pose elegantly overlooking our marquee set for a sensational gala evening.

Our evening includes a 5 course dinner prepared by one of Cape Town finest chefs. While a sensational meal is served, the stage is set with some of South African best vocal and instrumental performers.

After some dance, dessert and after dinner spoils we journey back to Cape Town.

EVERY CLOUD HAS TO HAVE A SILVER LINING – MAKE VISITORS BELIEVE IN OUR DESTINATION
Cape Town aerial view, South Africa

The function of a DMC could be mistaken by some individuals as an porthole to simply secure accommodation, some transfers and other services that are required to experience a destination.

My personal take on a DMC is, we are the concierge for our respective destinations. The one destination contact an interested guest can go to without looking any further. We remove the question on, how to get to us?, and, what to do?

We are the best compass for directing guests towards choice accommodations, and services that best compliment their needs and wants. Because we are specialist on our destination, we guide concerned guests with advise that guides away the conversation around safety and security.

How? We do not avoid the topic, but we show them our city and countryside, and let them meet the people of the land. We allow to open discussion around topics of concern, and answer those questions with actual local knowledge from guides, ourselves and the people of our destinations.

Our strongest response is educational journeys to our countries. By hosting agents ignorant on our services, attractions and value, we educate and enhance their knowledge, and allow them to depart as diplomats.

We use our websites, social media and many other platforms as advertising, but, there is very powerful messaging through word of mouth generated by actual guest experiences.

Cape Town – a Grande Beach Event

Our group of 100 guests were looking for a relaxed setting to welcome their guest to Cape Town and South Africa. The Grande Cafe & Beach, pitched on the shores of Table Bay set the table for this elegant Cape Town welcome. Welcome with some cocktail and a sensational beach setting, guests enjoyed a sensational dinner complimented by a local band to set the tone and tunes for a celebrated evening in this iconic city.
